What is CBD?

You may heard about CBD in Hong Kong over the recent year. But what exactly is CBD? Me(picture behind*), thinking.

What CBD means?

CBD stands for cannabidiol.

CBD stands for cannabidiol. There are at least 113 cannabinoids in the Cannabis Sativa plant. CBD is among 100 "phytocannabinoids" unique to hemp and endows the plant with its robust therapeutic profile.

You might always hear people talking about CBD and THC. These two compounds can also be found in the Cannabis Sativa plant. CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid, which is doesn't trigger a "high" feeling. THC is mainly for the psychoactive effects that make you feel "high".

How CBD works?

Understanding the connection of the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) and CBD

The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) plays a role in regulating functions to maintain neutral, balanced state stability such as:

- reproduction and fertility
- stress
- mood
- sleep
- memory
- pain sensation
- immune function
- skin and nerve function

Endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes are involved with ECS.

Endocannabinoids are molecules produced by our bodies. Experts have identified two critical endogenous substances:

- anandamide (AEA)
- 2-arachidonoylglyerol (2-AG)

2-AG and AEA help maintain the smooth operation of internal functions. Our body produces these two endocannabinoids as needed. Endocannabinoids can bind to either receptor. The effects that result depend upon where the receptor is found and which endocannabinoid it binds to.

There are two main enzymes responsible for this work:

- Fatty acid amide hydrolase, responsible for decomposing AEA
- monoacylglycerol acid lipase, which normally breaks down 2-AG

On the biological level, the endocrine system's role is to help the body maintain balance, and CBD activates your endocrine system.

CBD is a molecule, not a miracle.

The CBD Challenge

Many people can significantly benefit from legally obtaining a wide range of cannabis remedies. CBD alone may not always work. There is convincing evidence that CBD combines with CBG and other comprehensive cannabis ingredients to work best.

Figuring out how to optimize one's therapeutic use of marijuana is the driving force behind the tremendous democratic laboratory experiment called medical marijuana that has been carried out state by state in recent years.

The emergence of potent hemp oil concentrates, non-toxic CBD-rich products and innovative smoke-free delivery systems have changed the field of treatment and the public's perception of cannabis.

It is no longer a matter of arguing about the value of cannabis as herbal medicine. The critical challenge today is to discern how to use cannabis to get the most therapeutic effect. Given the low-risk characteristics of CBD, many people are using CBD as an add-on therapy to existing treatment plans.

However, most health professionals know very little about CBD or cannabis therapy. They lack sufficient expertise to provide patients with adequate dosage, administration, CBD synergy, and any risk factors (including interactions with other drugs) consultation.

Instead, the responsibility has always been in a loose community, made up of self-reliant patients, supportive families, and pioneering doctors who have learned a lot through trial and error and shared information on guiding promising cannabis treatment pathways.
